I'm doing some research on open innovation, and you can't do that without reading the works of Henry Chesbrough. This book involves a lot of different aspects of the open innovation theories. Most of all I think that openness, transparency and the inclusion of external actors in internal processes, are important for producing valid innovations.
Chesbrough and Vanhaverbeke (2013; in press) propose that, in these industries , a company (the focal firm) should first determine its strategic drivers that can be

Open Innovation combines internal and external ideas into architectures and systems whose requirements are defined by a business model. Henry W. Chesbrough is an assistant professor at Harvard Business School in Boston. He can be reached at henry@chesbrough.com. His book, “Open Innovation: The New Imperative for creating and Profiting from Technology” (Harvard Business School Press, 2003), provides a detailed description of the open innovation model. References (7) Dr. Henry Chesbrough is a co-founder of the Open Innovation Community and created the theory and coined the term "open Innovation." He is Executive Director of the Center for Open Innovation at the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley, where he is also an adjunct professor. The open innovation model that Chesbrough describes shows the necessity of letting ideas both flow out of the corporation in order to find better sites for their monetization, and flow into the corporation as new offerings and new business models. Finding the right balance and mech- anisms for this situation to take place is critical.

In todays information-rich environment, companies can no longer afford to rely entirely on their own ideas to advance their business, nor can they restrict their innovations to a single path to market.

At the time, it was a bold and radical notion and it challenged the established mindset on innovation. Today, we are still working with this concept in many organizations. In the context of open innovation, networks and ecosystems enable organisations to access external knowledge (Chesbrough et al., 2006).
